Ask to see completed local projects, stone walls, patios, granite steps. Pay attention to base details, joint lines, drainage, and finish work. The quality is in the details.

2. Are you insured? Can I see a certificate?

Red flags to walk away from
Pressure to pay in full before any work starts. No physical address. No clear written estimate. Reviews that all read the same. Any one isn't a dealbreaker, two or more is a pass.

- What should I ask for before signing?
- Ask for a certificate of insurance, a written scope with materials named, and the crew that will actually be on site. Anyone who will not put the scope in writing is a risk.
- Is the lowest bid usually a problem?
- Often it means a thinner base, less gravel, or no drainage behind a wall. Those savings show up as settling and heaving two or three winters later in Massachusetts.
- Do you use subcontractors?
