Signs You Need Stonework / Masonry (and What to Do Next)

Stonework and masonry rarely fail overnight. Most walls and patios show early warning signs months before a serious problem. Here is what to watch for on your Boston, Massachusetts property.

Bulging or leaning walls

A wall that is starting to bow out or lean is telling you the base or drainage behind it is failing. Caught early, a section can be rebuilt. Ignored, the whole wall usually has to come down.

Loose or shifting stones

Stones you can wiggle by hand, or gaps that keep getting wider, mean the structure is moving. This is a safety issue around steps, seat walls, and any wall near a walkway.

Cracks, settling, and shifting grade

Vertical cracks, sunken patio sections, or soil washing out from behind a wall all point to base or drainage problems. The fix starts underground, not at the surface.

Water pooling near walls or foundations

Water that sits against a wall or your foundation will eventually find a way in. Drainage corrections, French drains, and grading are usually part of the stonework fix.
